Intermediate Training
Congratulations on completing Beginner 1 & 2 training! The third stage of obedience training typically lasts four to six weeks. In this stage of training we work on taking the skills you have learned in Beginner 1 & 2 and we add distractions. We will meet in public, at parks, stores etc. There is a difference between a dog that knows commands at home and a trained dog. Intermediate is the training step that you need to have a trained dog. It's the step in the process that my students love because you really see how all your hard work has paid off. Often my intermediate students will agree to a group session so they can work on their skills with other dogs present. We also use this time to complete the skills necessary to complete the AKC Canine Good Citizen test. I like for my students to complete the AKC CGC upon completion of intermediate.
Advanced Training
Advanced training is for those who have completed the AKC CGC Skills test and want to continue and pass the AKC Community Canine (Canine Good Citizen Advanced or CGCA) and/or the AKC Urban Canine Good Citizen (CGCU). These are similar skills tests but done under tougher conditions. I also can include some new skills during advanced training such as; performing a skill from a long distance or in motion such as down. Targeting an object, backing in the heel, paws elevated on an object and moving their body around that object. Advanced training lasts six weeks on average. Advanced training is so much fun and I encourage all of my clients to make this a goal if possible.
Moving up the ladder towards advanced level training for your dog is an exciting time.
